Canopies and Weights
Canopies that can be securely tied to a vehicle will only need
weights on the legs that are not tied to the vehicle. It is
recommended to tie your canopy frame to a vehicle whenever possible.
Canopy tops, if loose will flap in the wind. Flapping in the wind is
what makes them tear. Loose tops also cause them to hold water when
it rains and can break your canopy.
should be able to be released quickly in the event of sudden winds.
Don't try to hold down your canopy, you will only get injured. Release the canopy top at the corners instead.
DIY canopy weights
The best idea I have seen and one that has been endorsed on other
markets and art fairs is the use of PVC pipe. You could always
purchase canopy weights from various manufacturers, but they tend to
be expensive. The goal is to get 40 or 50 pounds of weight on each
Concrete blocks/ buckets etc. pose a tripping hazard - as do water
bottles. Water bottles can leak and are not heavy enough. A 4 litre
water bottle (windshield washer bottle for example) weighs
approximately (4 x 2.2 pounds =) 8.8 pounds. To reach 40 lbs you
would need 5 on each leg which is not practical.
Things You'll Need
4 pieces 5-inch
diameter 30-inch PVC pipe
8 pieces 5-inch
diameter end caps
4 pieces eyelet bolts (1/4
8 pieces nuts to fit the eyelet bolts
8 pieces washers to fit the eyelet
bolts (1/4 inch)
160 lbs of sand (or
tie-down cam straps
4 10 inch pieces of velcro
Drill a hole in the center of one of the end caps sized to fit the
eyelet bolt. Put a nut, then a washer on the eyelet bolt. Put the
bolt in the hole, then put a washer and nut on the bolt from the
inside of the cap and tighten. This will be the top cap. You may want
to use some thread lock on the nuts or other means of securing the
nuts since once the weights are assembled, they cannot be
disassembled to tighten the nuts if they come loose.
PVC adhesive on the bottom end cap and attach to the bottom end of
the PVC tube. Allow to dry for 3 hours.
3/ Fill the pipe with
sand up to the desired weight. The advisable weight is around 40 to
4/ Apply PVC adhesive to the top cap and put it in
place on the PVC pipe. Allow to dry for 3 hours.
5/ Repeat for
the remaining pieces of PVC tube, end caps and eyelet bolts.
Place the weights next to each canopy leg and wrap with the Velcro
straps to prevent them from falling over.
7/ Attach the cam
straps to the weights and the frame of your canopy. Tighten the
straps but not enough to lift the weights off the ground. The canopy
frame is not designed to hold the weight. Note: ropes are not
recommended since they will often stretch when wet and may come
PVC glue is specially formulated for PVC pipe - no other glue will
do. Once end caps are glued on with PVC glue, they will be impossible
For handling sake, rather than making 40 - 50 pound weights, you
could make twice as many 20-25 pound weights.
